Positive / Negative Shape Design
STEP 1:
Watch the Demonstration Video:
In this video I will show you two methods of creative a striking positive/negative space cut-paper design. For this project you will need colored pager (construction paper works best, but color copy paper is great too), scissors, glue stick, ruler, and a black marker. No colored paper? My 2nd example uses gift wrapping paper! It is a little more tricky being so thin, but it creates a really pretty finished design.

STEP 2:
CUT YOUR PAPER AND ASSEMBLE
Choose one of the methods from the video and start cutting! I used a 2' square cardboard template to make the construction paper design. But, you can use any size. Also, feel free to use 2 or 3 colors and to mount your design on white paper. When gluing be sure to cover all the edges well. Place each piece carefully. Lining up the corners of the cut shapes is important. If you want, add extra detail with a sharpie.
Examples and variations:
I have included several examples from former students as well as a few I found on the internet. This project can be as simple or complex as you want.

Here is a simple complementary color design made with a half sheet of construction paper cut into 4 rectangles.
This is is just a half a sheet of orange construction paper with shapes cut out. Some of the shapes on this one are not on the edge. This takes care when it is time to paste since it is harder to place the shapes in the correct spot.

This is simple but bold and striking.
Just four squares but much more detail cutting here. Be careful that the shapes removed will fit on the the mounting paper once flipped over.
|
Black and white makes a great choice too!
These were made by folding the square and cutting a shape (like we do when making a heart). Then a second shape is cut from that piece and placed in the negative space.

Three more methods. The possibilities are endless!
